Western Australia’s total e-waste ban came into effect on July 1st, 2024, under the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery (e-Waste) Regulations. This ban prohibits certain types of electronic waste from being sent to landfill, requiring businesses and organisations to manage their e-waste through authorised recycling and disposal services.
The regulations primarily apply to significant entities, which include businesses that:
These businesses must ensure their e-waste is collected, stored, and transferred in compliance with the new regulations. Failure to do so may result in penalties of up to $10,000 per offence.
This policy aims to reduce landfill waste, increase resource recovery, and promote sustainable e-waste management practices across WA. Our team is here to explain the new rules & assist your business in complying to these new regulations.
The new Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery (e-Waste) Regulations introduced in Western Australia impose new rules on the disposal and management of electronic waste. These regulations are designed to reduce landfill waste, improve resource recovery, and ensure that e-waste is managed responsibly. Here’s a breakdown of the key regulations and how Secure Computer Recycling & Disposal (SCRD) can help your business stay compliant:
A significant entity must not send regulated e-waste to, or leave regulated e-waste at, a landfill site.
Secure Computer Recycling & Disposal is a Western Australia-owned and operated E-waste service provider, in operation for over 12 years. Our ISO 14001 accredited facility recycles your E-Waste across 10 waste streams ensuring your disposal is compliant and maximises recovery rates diverting all waste from landfill.
A significant entity must transfer regulated e-waste resulting from its activities to an E-Waste service provider.
SCRD’s fleet of vehicles and fully equipped ISO 14001 facility can handle all your E-Waste requirements for WARR compliancy
A significant entity must keep regulated E-Waste resulting from its activities separate from other waste.
SCRD will perform an on-site inspection of your storage area and can provide additional equipment to aid requirements you may have
A significant entity must not store regulated E-Waste resulting from its activities for more than 12 months after the month in which the waste results from the entity’s activities.
SCRD can schedule periodical E-Waste collection to ensure your equipment is compliant and disposed of within regulation timeframes
Significant entities must not, during the storage or transportation of regulated E-Waste resulting from its activities, do anything that would reduce the ability of the regulated e-waste to be treated, processed or recycled.
SCRDs fleet of vehicles and staff are equipped with the tools and training to perform collections, maintaining the ability to recycle and maximise recovery rates.
A significant entity must, not later than 31 July each year, record the following information for the immediate preceding financial year:
Description of e-waste as per Schedule 1, Column 1.
Total weight of regulated e-waste.
Name and address of the e-waste service provider.
SCRD’s customised reporting captures all the necessary information for WARR compliancy and will provide these reports annually in line with WARR regulations
Failing to comply with the e-Waste regulations can result in significant penalties. The regulations are in place to ensure that businesses manage their e-waste responsibly and prevent environmental harm. Each violation of the regulations carries a fine of up to $10,000. This includes penalties for improper disposal of regulated e-waste at landfill sites, failing to transfer e-waste to an authorised service provider, storing e-waste for longer than the allowed period, and mishandling it during storage or transport. Additionally, businesses must maintain accurate records of their e-waste activities and submit them by the annual deadline of 31 July. Failing to meet these requirements could also lead to fines. It’s crucial for businesses to stay compliant to avoid these penalties while contributing to a more sustainable future.
The introduction of the e-waste ban and the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery (e-Waste) Regulations in Western Australia is a significant step towards promoting responsible disposal and recycling of electronic waste. For businesses affected by these regulations, it is essential to comply with the new rules to avoid hefty penalties and contribute to a more sustainable future.
