Western Australia’s total e-waste ban came into effect on July 1st, 2024, under the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery (e-Waste) Regulations. This ban prohibits certain types of electronic waste from being sent to landfill, requiring businesses and organisations to manage their e-waste through authorised recycling and disposal services.

The regulations primarily apply to significant entities, which include businesses that:

✔️  Employ 200 or more staff at the start of a financial year.

✔️  Generate 5 or more tonnes of regulated e-waste annually.

These businesses must ensure their e-waste is collected, stored, and transferred in compliance with the new regulations. Failure to do so may result in penalties of up to $10,000 per offence.

A significant entity must not send regulated e-waste to, or leave regulated e-waste at, a landfill site.

A significant entity must transfer regulated e-waste resulting from its activities to an E-Waste service provider.

What the Regulation Says:

A significant entity must not store regulated E-Waste resulting from its activities for more than 12 months after the month in which the waste results from the entity’s activities.

What the Regulation Says:

e-Waste Record Keeping Requirements 

What the Regulation Says:

A significant entity must, not later than 31 July each year, record the following information for the immediate preceding financial year:

Description of e-waste as per Schedule 1, Column 1.
Total weight of regulated e-waste.
Name and address of the e-waste service provider.

What Are the Penalties for Non-Compliance?
